The Negative Impact of Sugar on Vitamin C

Thanks Owen, exactly what I had suspected, one can also add alcohol to Dr. Ely's theory . The hit to the immune system by sugar is an added insult. See: Fibiger's Work on Cancer & Sugar

Another good reason, from many, to ditch processed foods...

FYI - Dr. John Ely has a Glucose Antagonism Theory - that since both glucose and Ascorbate are drawn into cells by the same insulin-mediated pathway, that too much sugar can crowd out vitamin C. Dr. Ely says he warned Pauling about this in the 70s, and that trials that do not try to restrict sugar will not have "spectacular" effects.

Ely is just finishing a study where sugar was restricted in the subjects, and say the results are what he expected. He says the ascorbate effect is pronounced, timely, undeniable with sugar restrictions. This will be published in the near future - somewhere. The study of colds I believe.

But this is probably an important key for folks interested in maximizing their vitamin C intake - not just serum vitamin C, but maximizing uptake to cells - where it counts.
