Paul Offit talks in his recent book Deadly Choices, about how the whooping
cough vaccine has reduced deaths from that disease from 7,000 to only 30.
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a devastating infection. Before a vaccine was
first used in the United States in the 1940s, about three hundred thousand cases
of whooping cough caused seven thousand deaths every year, almost all in young
children. Now, because of the pertussis vaccine, fewer than thirty children die
every year from the disease. But times are changing.
The problem with these statements is that they are not
supported by the evidence. When we look at the actual data, we see that although
many people did die from whooping cough in the early part of the 1900s, by the
time the vaccine had been introduced the death rate in the United States had
declined by more than 90 percent. Using the source that was referenced to make
the statement in the Pediatrics paper, we see that the decline in deaths from
the peak was approximately 92 percent before the introduction of the DTP

This book is nothing but a prolonged advertisement for the vaccine manufacturers from a physician who has profited handsomely from his own personally developed vaccine. There are a number of gross errors in the book and a slanderous attack on all the people who have formed groups to educate the public about vaccine dangers and the over-stated efficacy of these vaccines. The so-called "anti-vaccine" people actually contain many who do not oppose vaccines, if they are safe and effective and the indications are justified. These individuals are mostly very intelligent, dedicated people who do extensive research and have the aid of some of the most well-respected researchers in the world. Many have had their children destroyed by these vaccines. Offit admits that he knows nothing about the neurological sciences, yet he boldly states that there is no mechanism to explain how vaccines could harm the brain. There are a number of well researched studies that clearly outline such a mechanism explain in accepted scientific terms why exposing small children and newborns to extremely high doses of known neurotoxins in repeated doses can result in abnormal brain development and prolonged neurological pathological change. The fact that children are given numerous vaccines during a single office visit and that this schedule is repeated every two months for the 1st 2 years of life defies what we know concerning excessive immune stimulation on the rapidly developing brain. Defenders of this dangerous vaccine policy, such as Offit, cannot justify what they are proposing and doing. The science is heavily on the side of those of us who insist on vaccine safety, efficacy and informed consent.
