[Toxic stagnant air from lack of park and squares, crowded buildings, Overcrowding and poor Sanitation was a major contribution towards smallpox in the 19th century1. Now the air is filled with more and more car fumes (see: Swine Flu 2009) helped by the suppression of public transport (see: Public transport), pesticides, farmer sewage fertilising, incinerators, and so on. Also we have the decades long fallout from nuclear testing, most likely the main cause of lung cancer (see: Radiation). The UK government covered up smog deaths in 1953 by inventing an influenza epidemic1. [2012 March Letter] Medical statistics which just don't add up... Heart disease in all countries is closely related to power station coal consumption. In Britain, both rise to a maximum in 1974 and fall steeply after 1978. Three-quarters of the fall occurred before statins were introduced. France and Japan have low rates of heart disease and no coal consumption. Mediterranean countries have a high saturated fat diet — animal fat — but a low heart disease rate. In the U.S., coal use and heart disease fall in line with each other. China has rising coal consumption and a rising incidence of heart disease. Why is this? Because sulphur dioxide from coal is injected by power stations into the stratosphere. It absorbs the 295nm band of UV, thereby reducing Vitamin D production in the skin. Low Vitamin D is closely associated with the risk of heart disease.

[1999] Poisoning the Poor By George Monbiot Dr Dick van Steenis was asked to look at the possible health effects of pollution from power stations in South Wales. He struck upon the simple device of mapping the use of asthma inhalers by primary school children. He was astonished to discover that, before long, he was able to predict the number of asthma patients to within one or two per cent, simply by measuring how far they lived from the nearest major source of pollution. In some villages, he found as many as 38 per cent of four and five year olds using inhalers.

To cover up the true extent of the smog disaster the government invented an
influenza epidemic. In fact research has shown there was no epidemic and
that the thousands more people who continued to die for the next four months did
so because of the air pollution. ....To maximise revenue the UK was exporting
its clean coal and keeping the sulphur laden "dirty" coal for UK power stations
and domestic fires. The result was a combination of soot laden air and droplets
of sulphuric acid lying in a 200ft deep blanket across London, leading to the
worst smog ever recorded.
Devra Davis, honorary professor at the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in her book When Smoke Ran Like Water - published
on December 5, to coincide with the anniversary - blames Harold Macmillan, then
minister for housing, for suppressing the truth about dirty coal. A later
claim by the Ministry of Health that 5,655 had died of influenza in the first
three months of 1953 was a fabrication to hide the smog deaths.

shortened as a result of air pollution.

there are 28m vehicles, 85% of them cars. Coal provides only 15% of energy for
