Prescribing Zoloft and Other Antidepressants to a Fetus

Dr. Tinus Smits the founder of CEASE-therapy for autism, believes that:

Autism is an accumulation of different causes:

  • about 70% is due to vaccines
  • 25% to toxic medication and substances
  • 5% to some diseases

According to a study in the Archives of General Psychiatry, women who took Zoloft or other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were twice as likely to give birth to a child with autism spectrum disorder.

A review of medical records of more than 1,800 children, including 298 who have autism, found the risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder was about twice as high among women who took SSRIs in the year before giving birth.

Mothers who take Zoloft in late pregnancy can “pass along” side effects to their baby.   Side effects include:  persistent neonatal pulmonary hypertension, neonatal serotonin syndrome and a neonatal withdrawal syndrome. Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a group of problems that occur in a newborn who had been exposed to drugs while in the mother’s womb.

Suicide, worsening of depression and mania (especially in undiagnosed bipolar disorder) are among the psychiatric serious Zoloft side effects. For example these two tragic cases were attributed to Zoloft.

1.      Brynn Hartman, wife of comedian Phil Hartman, shot and killed her husband and herself while on Zoloft.

2.      Christopher Pittman at age twelve shot and killed his grandparents. He claims a voice inside his head told him to kill his grandparents on November 28, 2001.Christopher had recently started to take Zoloft to treat mild depression.

My personal experience with Zoloft:

When my twins were young, I was seeing a behavior specialist to assist me in how to deal with ADHD children. Although I was not clinically depressed she suggested that I try an antidepressant. She said it would help take the edge off the stress of raising ADHD-diagnosed twins. I was prescribed Zoloft. The one positive thing I had going on in my life was a happy marriage. Within three days of taking Zoloft, my sex drive disappeared, my emotions felt as though they were trapped in a cave inside my brain and I was numb and emotionally disconnected from my family. The medicine actually made me depressed. I stopped Zoloft after a month.

In experiencing adverse symptoms while taking Zoloft, it made me wonder how much damage SRRI’s are causing to a fetus’ developing brain. There are many safe effective alternative ways to treat depression. And we should start by addressing the root causes of depression.  Some of the most common reasons for depression are:

Hypothyroid (low thyroid):  When the thyroid gland is underactive, your metabolism slows down and you may suffer from depression along with many other health conditions. To learn more go to Hypothyroidism and Depression.

Candida (overgrowth of yeast in the gut):  Psychological problems may include: depression, irritability, anxiety, and panic attacks. To learn more about the causes and solutions to treating candida go to Candida and Depression

Heavy metal toxicity:  A mouth full of amalgam (silver/mercury) fillings can cause depression. The most common dental amalgam consists of forty-three percent to fifty-four percent mercury. Consider having fillings replaced with composite fillings.   To learn more about how mercury leaches from amalgam fillings and how it is associated with many psychological disorders including Depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, Manic Depressive disorder visit Amalgam Illness - Information About Mercury and Amalgam Fillings

Removing mercury fillings needs to be done using a rubber dam and an evacuation hose.  This is extremely important as the mercury itself as well as the vapor can make people sick.  Wife and mother Debbie Lindgren learned this when she came home after dropping her children home from school and found her husband laying on the floor unable to lift his head.  She immediately took him to the hospital where an MRI and CT scan were done.  The physician noted inflammation in his brain and could not figure out where it came from.  Debbie called her family physician and he insisted she get a hold of her husband’s schedule for the last few weeks.  She did and mentioned to him that he had a dentist appointment two days earlier.  He suggested testing for mercury poisoning.  The hospital tested both blood and urine levels and her husband was diagnosed with mercury toxicity.  He needed chelation therapy three times per week for six weeks; but his headaches went away and he was able to return to work full time.  Visit Layton Dental  for more information on the proper removal of amalgams.

Stop eating fish high in mercury such as tuna and sushi and have your doctor order a test for heavy metal toxicity. Testing for heavy metal toxicity for mercury is done by hair, urine or stool analysis. For a list of fish that are high in mercury, visit Mercury Levels in Fish : American Pregnancy Association  These guidelines state that no more than 12 oz of low mercury fish should be consumed weekly;  no more than three 6 oz. servings per month of high mercury fish; and highest mercury fish should be avoided altogether.

If levels of mercury and or other metals are elevated there are ways to safely remove heavy metals from the body. Learn more about chelation therapy by visiting Mercury Exposure.

Nutritional Deficiencies:  Amino Acid deficiencies, Vitamin D deficiencies, and Omega 3 deficiencies have all been linked to depression.

Amino acid deficiency:  amino acids create neurotransmitters in your central nervous system. These transmitters help regulate mood and process the proteins that our bodies need to survive. In many cases, amino acids help depression.  In addition, amino acids To learn more go to:   Amino Acids & Supplements For Anxiety & Depression ...

An amino acid profile should be done to determine which ones are potentially deficient and a plan designed by your practitioner should be implemented.

Vitamin D deficiency:  Although it's called a vitamin, vitamin D is really a prohormone not a vitamin. Vitamin D is made in the body in the presence of sunlight.  A number of studies report a connection between low vitamin D levels and the risk of depression

Treat depression with vitamin D from safe sun exposure instead of using antidepressants that may have dangerous side effects.

The primary way our bodies were meant to get vitamin D is from sunlight, but if you have tested low for vitamin D, it is wise to also start supplementing with vitamin D3 supplements.  Next time you have your blood drawn ask your doctor to include a vitamin D test and if needed, begin supplementing with D3.

Fish OilFish oil and essential fatty acid research suggests that fish oil is also useful for certain types of anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. To learn more about organic fish oil supplements/ Essential Fatty Acid deficiencies go to WebMD

According to a report released on October 19 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the use of antidepressant drugs in the United States has increased by almost 400% over the past 20 years to the highest rate ever. Women are 250% more likely to take antidepressants than are men.

Use of Zoloft during pregnancy increased by about 200% in recent years, despite birth defects risks linked to the SSRI antidepressant drug, according to a 2011 study published by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study, “Medication use during pregnancy, with particular focus on prescription drugs: 1976-2008,” found that Zoloft (setraline) has become the most commonly prescribed antidepressant for use while pregnant.

This is especially alarming in light of the evidence linking Zoloft use during pregnancy to a drastically increased risk of ASD well as several other congenital birth defects.

Mothers and families across the U.S. are beginning to file Zoloft lawsuit claims to recover financial compensation for the Zoloft birth defect side effects suffered. Join the community of people who are standing up to Pfizer and demanding that drug companies stop putting profits before people.

What are all these young women doing on an anti depressant to begin with?

My daughter had kawasakis as a child and when she became a teenager I found out why zyloft was a good idea, but why, why, why ---- then I found out she was bipolar too. You sure don't want an anti-depressant only when dealing with bipolar and you sure don't want to continue with additional vaccines either.

This is what we have done to our children - I am sorry my daughter!

Zoloft, and any other SSRI antidpressant, should not be prescribed to any expectant mothers. The evidence is already available that Paxil and Zoloft use during pregnancy can influence fetal development, and evidence proving this for the rest will follow shortly.
Since mercury causes reproductive dysfunction, I'll bet some women with depression have been told they will never have children. Then when they go off birth control due to fear of side effects, surprise! Unplanned pregnancy.

So one is left with even more hard choices. On airplanes, mothers are told to put on their oxygen masks first. And doctors have been telling pregnant women that Zoloft is safe.

Then the problems continue with every drug and vaccine combination that doctors say is safe. Not everyone has access to reliable information on holistic health, or is receptive to it.

Protocols exist to help patients (including children and pregnant or post-partum women) taper off psychotropic medications safely, minimizing withdrawal adverse side effects. These protocols emphasize the use of significant doses of a broad spectrum micronutrient product and a broad spectrum free form amino acid supplement. These protocols in my experience have been quite successful and should be considered by people who wish to lower the dose or get off their psychotropic medications.
The program is improved by utilizing the methods discussed by Deborah Merlin in this article, such as improving diet, removing foods to which the person is sensitive (sugar and gluten containing foods seem to top the list), paying attention to heavy metal toxicity (such as mercury amalgam fillings and fish with high mercury content), participating in an exercise program, fresh air, sunlight and improvement of sleep hygiene.
Over the long haul and sometimes even in short term situations prescription psychotropic medications (antidepressants, mood stabilizing drugs, atypical antipsychotics, prescription sleeping aids, stimulants for ADD & ADHD and others) often do more harm than good. Frequently, the doses of these medications can be lowered or stopped when these principles are understood and applied.

Thank you for highlighting the dangers of SSRIs. And it's not just foetuses that can be damaged - it's the children and adults as well.

A Zoloft lawyer may explain to you how to pursue a lawsuit against its manufacturer (Pfizer) for you to acquire due financial compensation for the damages the drug caused. Know that several lawsuits are already been filed by affected users. Zoloft has been reported of causing horrible withdrawal symptoms and negative side effects, according to legal observers.
Irving Kirsch (The Emperor's New Drugs: Exploding the Antidepressant Myth) once described his experiences gathering data for his research on a CBC Canada radio interview. His study here:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2253608/?tool=pubmed

The Amazon book reviews here are an interesting reminder of the interview (which I haven't been able to find online)

http://tinyurl.com/czml3jy

Some review excerpts (G Lion in particular):

"Kirsch uncovers a classic conflict of interest between the FDA's mission to protect the public and its funding sources provided by drug companies. Kirsch mentions an FDA researcher who is reminded that the FDA's customers are the drug companies. Stunned the researcher responds: "I thought it was the public." Soon after, he left the FDA. The ones who stay don't question the mentioned conflict of interest. This is a caveat emptor whenever you see the label "FDA approved."

Kirsch was able to cut through this fog by using the Freedom of Information Act to obtain from the FDA the data on 38 unpublished clinical trials. He then conducted three meta-analysis between 1999 and 2008 by using the data from the published trials and the 38 unpublished ones. And, he invariably got the same overall results.

His main finding is that all anti-depressants are no better than placebo.

Kirsch states that anti-depressants are not good for you. He recognizes that many doctors and patients feel that if they work (regardless if 100% of the effect is due to placebo) why not use them. Well the reason is that they have nasty side effects including suicide, and akathisia that leads to violent behavior.

Kirsch shares how other researchers who confirmed his findings have been ostracized by the medical establishment. This entailed losing jop opportunities and being threatened to lose grants. This has not deterred the self-assured Kirsch one bit as he conclude[s] the book by stating: "I also enjoy rocking boats, especially when they are in need of sinking."

I know I've rambled on about Kirsch here before but I wanna vomit every time I see one of those idiotic "ask your doctor" ads for some antidepressant with a pretty name. It's important to know that people like Kirsch have the stones to take on these drug pushers and call them at their own game.
