Because there are many similarities between dog hearts and our own, they are used to study ways to prevent diseases of the heart and arteries.  Similarly, cats are most suitable for certain studies of vision, hearing and brain function.

In all studies involving surgery on laboratory animals, anaesthetics are used to ensure they do not suffer during or after the operation.

Are native animals used in research?

Yes.  Research studies are essential to ensure the survival of threatened and endangered species, including many native mammals and birds.  Australian and New Zealand scientists have a world-wide reputation for their skills in this area.

In Western Australia, for example, nutrition studies on the numbat are critical to the long-term survival of this endangered species.
