Is there any need to test cosmetics and other consumer products on animals?

Most of us would probably argue that there is no need to test new beauty products on animals these days.  After all, there are numerous ingredients available which are known to be safe in normal use.

However, new consumer products are constantly being developed - disinfectants and sunscreens are good examples - which have a potential to greatly improve human and animal health and welfare.

It would be unethical and unwise to market products such as these without first testing them on animals.  There is no law which requires manufacturers to do this, but they are legally liable for unpredicted side-effects arising from their use.

Some companies promote their cosmetic products on the basis they are not tested on animals.

This means the company has not tested its products on animals, but is confident to offer them for sale because the ingredients have been tested on animals
