How do cats and dogs help human medical research?

Research with dogs and other animals in the 1930s led to the discovery of insulin and the treatment of diabetes.  More recently, research with dogs has led to the development of heart pacemakers, open-heart surgery and organ (including kidney) transplants.

Because dog hearts are similar to our own, they are ideal for the study of ways to prevent diseases of the heart and arteries.  Similarly, cats are most suitable for certain studies of vision, hearing and brain function.
