Review in Guardian Newsletter, Spring 1995, page 18, of ANIMAL RESEARCH  T A K E S  LIVES - Humans and Animals BOTH Suffer:

Review by Rebecca Etheredge

"In November 1990, a pamphlet titled Animal Research Saves Lives - Humans and Animals Both Benefit was distributed throughout New Zealand.  The pamphlet was published by a number of organisations whose existence depends heavily on vivisection, including, among others, the Cancer Society of New Zealand, the Medical Research Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.  The pamphlet, complete with peculiar sketches of creepy looking people and barn-yard animals raises vague questions about 'animal research'.  At this stage I won't waste another word in describing its content except to say it is a blatant lie from start to finish and its dangerous assertions would make any anti-vivisectionist choke on their breakfast if not bring it up.

I will, however, bring your attention to ANIMAL RESEARCH  T A K E S  LIVES - Humans and Animals BOTH Suffer, written by Bette Overell and published in 1993 to contest the absurd content of Animal Research Saves Lives.  This book is phenomenal from start to finish, and it is hard to find the words to do it justice.  Essentially, Overell takes each one of the claims made in the pamphlet and disproves them - always on scientific grounds.  ANIMAL RESEARCH  T A K E S  LIVES - Humans and Animals BOTH Suffer is by no means a simple rebuttal of the points raised by the pro-vivisection alliance in their pamphlet.  In her book Overell tells the whole story - the truth behind the vivisection industry, vaccinations, the development of drugs, cancer, diabetes - the chapters are so extensive I could take up the rest of this page with a summary alone.

Evidently a tremendous amount of research has gone into the book, the writer has quoted from a great variety of sources to support and emphasise the points in her own text.  Contrary to what Animal Research Saves Lives publishers would have us believe, the quotes cited are made by those in the medical industry who have seen first hand disastrous results of vivisection.

The information the anti-vivisectionist now has at their fingertips through this comprehensive book is priceless in the fight against vivisection, everyone must read it."
