Review in NZ Vegetarian, June-August 1993, page 1, of ANIMAL RESEARCH  T A K E S  LIVES - Humans and Animals BOTH Suffer:

"Bette Overell founded the NZ Anti-Vivisection Society and has been President for 15 years, she has produced this book as an answer to a booklet produced and distributed widely throughout New Zealand in 1990 by MAF (Animal Research Saves Lives).  As stated in the Introduction, 'To best understand and appreciate this book the reader should be aware that its contents are constrained to rebutting the claims made in Animal Research Saves Lives.  The author therefore recommends that it be read in conjunction with the booklet...'  Bette Overell has worked tirelessly for the abolition of vivisection in New Zealand and this book gathers together evidence from many sources and statements from medical and scientific researchers showing that vivisection is not only unnecessary and cruel, but that it is dangerous to human and world health as well.

It covers the Vivisection Industry, Farming Industry, Pet Industry, Endangered Species, Vaccinations and a long list of diseases, Drugs and the Law, and contains photographs and diagrams which illustrate with clarity the points being made.  References to the page numbers in the Animal Research Saves Lives booklet assist the reader with matching the claims made in that booklet with the appropriate rebuttal.

One quote from the chapter on the Development of New Drugs - 'Animal models differ from their human counterparts.  Conclusions drawn from animal research when applied to human disease are likely to delay progress, mislead and do harm to the patient.  Animal experimentation inevitably leads to human experimentation.' said by Dr Moneim A. Fadali, M.D., Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Surgery..."
