JAIPUR: Two kids died while three others were hospitalized in a serious
condition after they were administered contaminated measles vaccine in
Nagaur on Saturday.
Following the incident, the health department stopped all vaccinations
in the district and ordered an inquiry. The department also dismissed a
male nurse, Harish Meratiya, who administered the vaccine.
Health minister AA Khan said that action would be taken against five
officials including chief medical and health officer RK Meena,
reproductive child health officer JP Mirdha, block chief health officer
Ashok Singh Rajawat, medical officer
Subhash Bhaskar and nurse Leelamma. The minister said that a
fourmember team of doctors has been sent to Nagaur.
Late on Sunday night, three infants were admitted to JK Lone hospital
in Jaipur. Their condition was stated to be out of danger. All the
children are ninemonths-old and belong to the same locality in Thikara
Kala village. The three infants who are in JK Lone are Dharmendra, Pappu
and Sanjay. "The kids have swelling in the thigh. They were brought here
with complaints of fever. Now, all of them are out of danger," hospital
superintendent SD Sharma said.
Nagaur chief medical and health officer RK Meena said: "We have found
that ANM
Harish Meratiya had administered the contaminated vaccine to the
five children." He said that the vaccine was given to the ANM on July
14. Once opened, the vaccine will last only for 4 hours.
But the ANM administered it on July 28, almost 14 days after it was
opened. The first child died on July 30 in the morning and an hour
later, another child died.
