To protect consumers, all new cosmetic, toiletry and fragrance products must by law be tested for safety before sale. Cosmetics include products like sun screens, deodorants and skin moisturisers.
At present, the only way to conduct these tests is by using animals.
Some companies promote their cosmetic products on the basis that they are not tested on animals.
What this generally means is that the company has made the product from ingredients and formulations which it knows are safe, because these have been tested on animals in the past.
The retailer can therefore state accurately that its products were not tested on animals, while being confident that customers will not be placed at risk.
