Why are animals needed in medical research?  Are there no alternatives?

Researchers use non-animal methods wherever they can.  This is for humane reasons and because animal testing is generally more expensive than non-animal methods, where these are available.

Cell and tissue cultures, for example, can be used to tell us if a chemical or product is likely to be safe or useful.  They are also used to make vaccines which once could only be used made by using live animals.

But for many studies, there is no choice but to work with animals whose bodily functions are similar to ours.  New surgical techniques - such as for organ transplants - cannot be simulated on a
