The following was published in Wellington newspaper City Voice, 24 February 1994
I recently visited schools and public libraries throughout this country and can report that I heard no comments favouring the pamphlet Animal Research Saves Lives (ARSL) while I was promoting the NZ Anti-Vivisection Society rebuttal ANIMAL RESEARCH T A K E S LIVES - Humans and Animals BOTH Suffer. Perhaps Ann Ballin (17 Feb) who wrote that ARSL was 'extremely well received' could provide the names of the schools and libraries at which ARSL has stood the test of time and scrutiny.
Ms Ballin also refers to 'reviews' of the book which she says 'confirm that the book is based on anecdote and personal opinion'. She does not provide any examples of such reviews nor am I aware of the existence of any. Conversely we have a wealth of reviews which confirm that the book is 'loaded with credible references for substantiation' (Dr and Susan Stewart, USA), contains 'meticulously documented and sourced evidence' (Campaign Against Fraudulent Medical Research, Australia) and 'gathers together evidence from many sources and statements from medical and scientific researchers' (NZ Vegetarian).
It would be unfortunate if your readers gained the impression that the Council for Care of Animals in Research and Teaching (represented by Ms Ballin) is an independent, unbiased provider of information on vivisection. Their members and associates include Crown Research Institutes using animals, universities, the Health Research Council and the Agricultural Chemical and Animal Remedies Manufacturers Association, i.e. the vivisectors and their promoters.
