BCG Vaccines:
Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Vaccine BCG
Vaccine, Dried Tub/Vac/BCG. A freeze-dried preparation of live bacteria of a strain
derived from the bacillus of Calmette and Guérin.
Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Vaccine, Percutaneous Tub/Vac/BCG(Perc)
A preparation of live bacteria of a strain derived from the
bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (important: this preparation must not
be confused with the intradermal preparation)
Cholera vaccine
Cholera vaccine contains heat-killed Inaba and Ogawa sub-types of Vibrio cholerae, Serovar O1. Cholera vaccine provides little protection and cannot control the spread of the disease; it is no longer available in the UK.

Unimmunised adults and children over 10 years who are contacts of a diphtheria case or carrier are given the primary immunisation course; immunised adults and children over 10 years are given the booster dose. Available from Health Authorities or (in England only) direct from FarillonDiphtheria antitoxin
Diphtheria antitoxin is used for passive immunisation; it is prepared in horses therefore reactions are common after administration. It is now only used in suspected cases of diphtheria (without waiting for bacteriological confirmation); tests for hypersensitivity should be first carried out. It is no longer used for prophylaxis because of the risk of hypersensitivity; unimmunised contacts should be promptly investigated and given erythromycin prophylaxis (section 5.1, table 2) and vaccine (see notes above).
Diphtheria Antitoxin
Dip/Ser. Dose: prophylactic by intramuscular injection, 5002000 units (but not used, see notes above); therapeutic 10 00030 000 units increased to 40 000100 000 units in severe cases; doses of up to 30 000 units should be given intramuscularly but for those over 40 000 units a portion is given intramuscularly followed by the bulk of the dose intravenously after an interval of ½2 hours Note. Children require the same dose as adults, depending on the severity of the case. Available from Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (Tel (020) 8200 6868) or in Northern Ireland from Public Health Laboratory, Belfast City Hospital (Tel (028) 9032 9241).Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine

May be given on a lump of sugar; not to be given with foods which contain preservatives Available from Health Authorities or (in England and Scotland only) direct from Farillon 1. BP permits code OPV for vaccine in single doses provided it also appears on pack. Note. Poliomyelitis vaccine loses potency once the container has been opened, therefore any vaccine remaining at the end of an immunisation session should be discarded; whenever possible sessions should be arranged to avoid undue wastage.Inactivated (Salk)
Poliomyelitis Vaccine, Inactivated Pol/Vac (Inact). An inactivated suspension of suitable strains of poliomyelitis virus, types 1, 2, and 3. Dose: by subcutaneous injection, 0.5 mL or as stated on the label; for primary immunisation 3 doses are required at intervals of 4 weeks Available direct from Farillon. Note. Should be ordered one dose at a time (on a named-patient basis) and only when required for useRabies vaccine:
Rabies Vaccine (Aventis Pasteur MSD Ltd) Freeze-dried inactivated Wistar rabies virus strain PM/WI 38 1503-3M cultivated in human diploid cells, net price single-dose vial with syringe containing diluent = £22.15 IMPORTANT. Studies have shown that when this vaccine is injected into the gluteal region there is a poor response. Concomitant administration of chloroquine may also affect the antibody response. Because of the potential consequences of inadequately treated rabies exposure and because there is no indication that fetal abnormalities have been associated with rabies vaccination, pregnancy is not considered a contra-indication to post-exposure prophylaxis. If there is substantial risk of exposure to rabies, pre-exposure prophylaxis may also be indicated during pregnancy
