"Medicine testing

Sir, Dame Ann Ballin's letter (The Post, Feb 22) claims that animal experiments are necessary 'to safeguard public health'.  How then does she explain the fact that between 1972 and 1983 alone, 22,631 medicines were withdrawn from world markets due to health damage and deaths, yet they had presumably passed the legally required animal tests with flying colours?  And how does she account for the fact that 6 percent of all illnesses are caused by animal-tested medications? (ref Report of Congress of Clinical Medicine, Wiesbaden 1976); or that 3000 deaths from animal-tested medicines occurred over one year alone in Germany, as reported at a meeting of German insurance companies?
