Some people who want to stop the use of animals in research, use photos and videos of laboratory animals to make their case. These have huge emotional appeal. The intention is, of course, to shock us, to outrage us.
The photos and videos are very skilfully presented. They deliberately play on our feelings, but we are seldom told what is actually happening, why it is being done and what was the final outcome.
Most of the filming was done many years ago in other countries and shows practices that have since been discarded.
Some of the photos used in this way show animals with their heads in clamps, rabbits with their eyes held open to test chemicals (the "Draize" test) and burn research using live animals.
