Even human medical research has provided great benefits for pets and farm animals.  Many drugs developed for humans are used in veterinary medicine.

Also, there have been a number of vaccines - such as for rabies - which benefit humans and animals alike.

Thanks to animal research, our pets lead healthier and happier lives than ever before.

• It's not so long ago that distemper epidemics used to sweep the country, killing thousands of dogs and leaving many others weakened and with permanent nervous damage.  These days, because most puppies are vaccinated, distemper is almost a thing of the past.
• Similarly, feline enteritis used to be a major killer of cats.  Vaccination of kittens means that the disease is now rarely seen in vet clinics.
• Other cat diseases which are prevented by vaccination include calicivirus infection and rhinotracheitis.  Both used to cause widespread misery.
• Antibiotics are also vital in curing and preventing infections in pets which have been injured in fights or accidents; or which have required life-saving surgery.
• Even many of the surgical techniques used by vets to prolong the lives of pets were pioneered by surgeons seeking to prolong the lives of people.  If they are involved in accidents, there's every chance they can be successfully treated.
